With Walk in Philadelphia # 5, around and beyond Passyunk Square, you'll often be off the beaten path to see parts of the city where locals outnumber tourists, yet where there're enough unusual sights to make it worth your trip there, and plenty of places to eat or shop. Depending on the choices you'll make along your way, you'll spend from about90 minutes to a few hours there, but you surely won't regret the experience of feeling like a real Philadelphian. 🍧There is an excerpt of this walk below to give you an idea of what it is. 💚Otherwise, it is available in full for a few $ on Payhip/ImagesVoyagesImpressions in a PDF file that you'll be able to download on your phone. ✨NB:
A : Once you exit the metro station, look at the downtown skyscrapers rising in the distance, and you'll know ... is on your right. B: Take it, and you'll soon cross ... and its Christmas decorations on your left. Since around 2000, the fifty or so houses in this area have been adorned with extravagant lights that attract crowds from Thanksgiving until New Year's Day. It’s called The Miracle on... A little further on, you'll reach a small square where you'll start to see many shops, and ... will be on your left. C: This is the area's main shopping street, known for its alternative stores, cafes, and restaurants, and, after a while, its fountain. It sings and is sometimes decorated with crocheted designs that change according to the seasons and events (a crocheters' association takes care of this). Before that, however, and on your left, you will have passed some superb, enormous murals decorating a municipal parking lot. Continuing along the street past the fountain (which, in fact, sings because hidden speakers around its perimeter are playing music), you will find a large parking lot on your left. Conveniently located in front of a supermarket, you'll find restrooms there (ask the guardian at the entrance for the key). A large prison once stood on this site, which housed ..., the swindler, murderer, horse thief, and more, who was hanged in 1896. D: You're at ..., so turn right and then immediately left onto the narrow ... to see a series of murals, including "...," which, as its name suggests, is best seen at night. The street is still a bit run-down, but the goal of these murals is to transform it into a place for people to meet and explore, where it was once a dangerous area. By going there, you'll be contributing to this revitalization. (the rest is on the pdf...) Ready to explore the city on your own?
