Choose Walk in NYC # 13, East and Central Harlem, to experience Latino culture then a gentrified and trendy area. It's a 3 miles unusual self-guided tour that will take you about 2 hours to complete if only strolling and taking photos, much more if you visit the galleries along the way. You’ll see plenty of local restaurants, some street art and graffities (but less than what it used to be), small and colorful shops, impressive brownstones, art galleries, and a jazz museum. 🍿There is an excerpt of it below to give you an idea of what it is. 💕 Otherwise, it is available in full for a few $ on Payhip/ImagesVoyagesImpressions in a PDF file that you'll be able to download on your phone. ✌️NB:
A: Your walk begins at the ... metro exit. Head toward 3rd Ave and turn left, and you’ll immediately be immersed in the neighborhood’s ethnic diversity: people chat in front of shops of all kinds; old men sitting on folding chairs seem to guard their entrances; children in uniforms walk to and from school; small restaurants don’t bother to cater to the almost nonexistent tourists; you sometimes wonder if there might be some illegal activity here and there. In any case, you quickly sense the underlying energy of the neighborhood. What now seems to be missing along 3rd Ave, and which justified the redesign of this walk are the murals that were everywhere and were a characteristic of the Barrio, as this part of Harlem is called. There are still some to the south and some probably temporary along the fences, but much less than before. A sign that the population is changing? B: To familiarize yourself with Latino art, however, you will find at ... the Hunter East Harlem Gallery located on the ground floor of the Silberman School of Social Work. It is open Wednesday to Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and it exhibits works often linked to Latin America and the Caribbean but it is not always certain that the people at reception are aware of it. Be persistent! C: Once back on 3rd Ave, turn left and continue to... which you will take on the left. You are now in the black part of Harlem and the main artery of the neighborhood, very lively and inhabited by unique characters. The activity on the sidewalks is intense and the storefronts very colorful. (The rest is on the pdf...) Ready to explore the city on your own?
