Walk in NYC # 10, discovering Greenwich Village
Choose Walk in NYC # 10, discovering Greenwich Village, for its relaxed atmosphere, its student life, its fashionable places, its fake village charm.

It
is a 3 miles self-guided tour that will take you about 2 hours of walking and taking photos, more if you visit the different galleries along the way.

The streets are often quiet and pretty, sometimes lined with little restaurants or boutiques, and it's a pleasure to meander through them.

🥐There is an excerpt of it below to give you an idea of what it is.

💥Otherwise, it is available in full for a few $ on Payhip/ImagesVoyagesImpressions in a PDF file  that you'll be able to download on your phone.

🎈NB:

  • You can read much more about the general content and philosophy of these walks on the home page and see some comments there too.
  • The excerpt is the beginning of the description (a bit truncated here), after the full map and the useful info about highlights, metros, buses, bikes, restrooms, and so on. 🚟
  • The letters correspond to points indicated on the map, so you always know where you are along the trail or where you're heading.

A: Take the metro to ... station; once there, find E ... St. heading west toward the Hudson River.

B: Then turn left when you arrive on 5th Ave. (which is the boundary between streets starting with E – for East, and those starting with W – for West, because it divides Manhattan more or less in two).

You will then see the superb contemporary buildings of the...

You can enter its galleries along 5th Ave on the right at number 66 so don't immediately turn right onto ... St if you want to see them, they might indeed be your first stop.

C: Once on W13th St and on the left halfway between 5th Av and 6th Ave, you will find the ... Cultural Institute of NY, a Japanese Cultural Center with a contemporary art gallery open to the public.

At 6th Ave, turn right and then left onto ... St.

The streets here are not particularly interesting, it is everyday Manhattan with however nice views here and there of the skyscrapers in the distance, but you are looking for the ... Institute.

Its gallery, renovated in 2022 and which you will now find at street level on your left at number 144, is well worth a stop.

D: After your visit, continue towards ... Ave and take it on the left.

You will then reach the small ... Park, one of the hearts of Greenwich Village.

From there, follow .... Ave, turn left onto Bank St and then left again onto W 4th St.

The idea is to get lost in these quiet little streets lined with trees and red brick houses to find here and there the restaurants, cafes and shops that make the place charming, so let your curiosity guide you and make some detours if you wish as long as you finally reach point E.

E: It will be ... Park; it was at the center of gay protests in the 1970s when an adjacent bar, the Stonewall, was invaded by police.

(The rest is on the pdf...)
