Walk in NYC # 3, from Brooklyn to Chinatown and Little Italy
Walk in NYC # 3, from Brooklyn to Chinatown and Little Italy, is the 3rd of my four favorites walks to introduce New York City to newcomers.

Already a bit off the beaten path, it offers you superb views of the Manhattan skyscrapers before plunging into busy Chinatown.

You'll see Manhattan from a distance then reach it through its most famous bridge.

🧁There is an excerpt of it below to give you an idea of what it is.

💓Otherwise, it is available in full for a few $ on Payhip/ImagesVoyagesImpressions in a PDF file  that you'll be able to download on your phone.

👌NB:

  • You can read much more about the general content and philosophy of these walks on the home page and see some comments there too.
  • The excerpt is the beginning of the description (a bit truncated here), after the full map and the useful info about highlights, metros, buses, bikes, restrooms, and so on. 🚗
  • The letters correspond to points indicated on the map, so you always know where you are along the trail or where you're heading.

A: Take the subway to ... whichever is easier for you.

Once you get to Cadman Plz W, a major thoroughfare with partial views of the Brooklyn Bridge in the distance, take Court St. which then turns into Montague St., a busy shopping street.

It’s hard to give you a more specific direction initially because there are multiple subway exits; however, there are also plenty of maps here and there telling you where you are so you should be fine.

Court St. and then Montague St. are streets in Brooklyn Heights, one of the most upscale neighborhoods in Brooklyn with rows of gorgeous 3-story brownstone houses once you reach the Promenade

B: Your path takes you directly to ... which you will take to the right for, on one side, beautiful views of some of these houses and their wrought iron balconies, on the other, Lower Manhattan and its skyscrapers.

At ... area, continue onto Columbia Heights.

C: Once you reach ..., you have two options:
  • Turn right to pass a row of pizzerias and if you want to eat there, try Grimaldi, one of the oldest in the city with a queue which may however discourage you (take a look at the interior, though). From there, you will continue straight, go under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, turn left on Prospect St. and then right on Cadman Plaza E and you will find the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian crossing. It will be on your right under the Brooklyn Bridge and this is the path that the map indicates.
  • Turn a little left on Old Fulton St. then right on Water St. On the left, you will see the ferry terminal and a pedestrian path that will take you under the Brooklyn Bridge. There are green spaces and places to eat on both sides of this bridge. You can reach the banks of the East River with beautiful views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges and Manhattan in the distance, then Jane's Carousel and finally Pebble Beach, two photogenic places...
