Walk in Boston # 10, charming Beacon Hill
Walk in Boston # 10, charming Beacon Hill, will give you a taste of old and wealthy Boston by going up and down the hill.

This walk is one of the 4 essentials to discover the city on and off the beaten path.

It is
also a 2 to 3 miles unusual self-guided tour, half indoor, half outdoor, to explore one of the prettiest historic neighborhoods of Boston.

You will often walk along small streets lit by gas lamps and may imagine you are in an old European town.

🥐There is an excerpt of it below to give you an idea of what it is.

💥Otherwise, it is available in full for a few $ on Payhip/ImagesVoyagesImpressions in a PDF file that you'll be able to download on your phone.

🎈NB:

  • You can read much more about the general content and philosophy of these walks on the home page and see some comments there too.
  • The excerpt is the beginning of the description (a bit truncated here), after the full map and the useful info about highlights, metros, buses, bikes, restrooms, and so on. 🚟
  • The letters correspond to points indicated on the map, so you always know where you are along the trail or where you're heading.

A: Your walk begins at the ... T. station.

Once you exit it, take ... Street towards downtown (if you get to the river, turn around!) to reach your first stop on the left, the Museum of ... Its opening hours are quite limited during the day so check them before leaving if you want to go there.

B: It is part of Massachusetts General Hospital, the oldest and largest hospital in the city, and inside you will find a map of everything else you can see in the hospital without needing to be ill!

The museum itself tells you the history of medicine and offers you an overview of its most recent discoveries through interactive media presentations and temporary exhibitions.

On the first floor, you can learn how the hospital grew, the problems it had to solve to be built there, and how its innovations paved the way for other hospitals around the country.

On the 2nd floor you will find a garden with views of Beacon Hill.

C: Your next stop will be the ... Synagogue where, if you can visit it, you will learn more about Jewish immigration from the 1880s to 1924.

To get there from the Museum of ..., take ... Street again, cross it to go up ... Street (it’s quite steep!), then turn left onto ... Street.

The ... (the Shul) is at number 18 and the classical Baroque building is an interesting structure set back from the street and in need of some work on the interior. To visit it (for free), all you had to do was ring the doorbell for someone to come and open the door for you, but it seems less easy now (and with an entrance fee) so here too, find out beforehand when you can visit it or try your luck once there.

In any case, the explanatory panels that you will find inside will show you in detail what it meant to be an immigrant at that time.

Otherwise, opposite, you will find a small park where you can sit and play chess if you bring your pieces!

(The rest is on the pdf...)
